The supporting structure is standard steel tube and fitting or system scaffold, built to take the loading of the roof covering plus wind pressure. The covering itself is heavy-duty sheeting or reinforced tarpaulin, fixed with battens and ties rather than left loose, so it holds its shape and position in wind.

Drainage detailing matters as much as the covering; the roof pitch is designed to shed water away from the building and off the scaffold, with gutters or channels added where a large volume of run-off is expected.

The supporting scaffold goes up first, built to the shape and pitch needed to keep the covering taut and self-shedding rather than pooling water. The covering is then fixed section by section, with overlaps and ties checked before roofers are given access underneath.

It's also used where a re-roof is being carried out in phases over a longer commercial building, keeping each completed section covered until the whole roof is finished.

On homes, the priority is usually protecting the loft space, insulation and ceilings below, with the scaffold and covering sized to a single roof footprint and access planned around the household's daily use of the property.

Commercial temporary roofs often need to span larger, flatter or more complex roof areas, sometimes over an occupied building below, which brings in additional considerations around public safety at ground level, business continuity and phased sequencing across a bigger roof area.
