Scaffolding In Canterbury,Built Safe,Tidy And On Time

Canterbury is one of the furthest towns in our regular coverage area, reached from our Hadlow yard via the A2, and we take it on for both domestic and commercial scaffolding work throughout the city and its outlying suburbs. Whether it's a house near the cathedral precincts, a shop unit on the High Street, or a new-build on the edge of the city towards Sturry or Wincheap, Katie coordinates the booking and paperwork while Mason and the crew handle the build itself.

Canterbury's historic centre is unlike almost anywhere else we work: the cathedral, the medieval street pattern within the old city walls, and dense concentrations of listed timber-framed and Georgian buildings around Palace Street, Best Lane and the Buttermarket mean every scaffold in that part of the city has to be planned with real precision. Fixings need to avoid damaging historic fabric, footprints have to work within extremely narrow lanes, and in many cases we're liaising around conservation constraints and, where relevant, the interests of Canterbury Cathedral's own precincts. Outside the old city walls, Canterbury has a very different character. Areas like St Stephen's, Wincheap and Sturry have a mix of Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war housing, which call for more conventional domestic scaffolding: roof work, chimney repairs, extensions and repointing on brick that's more standard to work with than the timber-framed buildings in the centre. Further out towards the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, and the newer estates off the A28 and A257, we see more extension and new-build scaffolding on properties with generally easier vehicle access.

Canterbury's status as a university city and major tourist destination adds a layer most towns don't have: pedestrian footfall around the cathedral, the High Street and the Westgate Towers area is heavy for much of the year, and scaffolds in these zones need robust hoarding, clear pedestrian routes and, frequently, a pavement licence from Canterbury City Council. We build this into our planning and timing from the outset, often arranging deliveries early in the morning before the streets fill up with visitors and students.

We regularly take on chimney and roof scaffolds on the taller Victorian terraces around St Dunstan's and Northgate, repointing work on older brick facing the coastal-influenced damp that this part of Kent gets more of than inland areas, and full-house renovation scaffolds on period cottages tucked into the lanes near the cathedral. Commercial access scaffolding for shopfronts and offices around the High Street and St George's Street is also a steady part of our Canterbury workload.

Being close to the coast, Canterbury gets more driving rain and damp weather than our villages further inland around Hadlow and Tonbridge, which affects timber-framed and older brick buildings in particular. We factor this into scheduling weatherproofing and temporary roof systems, especially for re-roofing projects on the city's older housing stock where timing around wet weather really matters.
