Most chimney scaffolds use standard steel tube and fitting or a system scaffold, built with scaffold boards forming the working deck around the stack. Because the platform often sits well above the eaves, we use additional ties, bracing and sometimes rakers to keep the structure rigid at that height.

Toe boards and guard rails are fitted to every open edge, and where the stack is being rebuilt or has loose material, we'll often add debris netting or sheeting to stop dust and fragments spreading to gardens, cars or neighbouring roofs below.

Independent scaffolds; standing on their own standards rather than resting on the building, are the usual approach for chimney work, tied back into the main elevation at regular intervals for stability. On some roofs a birdcage or cantilevered section is needed to get a platform level with the stack without obstructing the ridge.

Because chimneys are often at an angle to the main roof slope, boards and bearers are set out individually rather than as a repeating standard bay, which takes more planning on the survey visit than a straightforward wall scaffold would.

A scaffold built for a full rebuild differs from one built purely for repointing or a pot swap, a rebuild needs more working space and a stronger loading capacity for stacked bricks and mortar, while a smaller repair might only need a compact platform and a single lift point.

We also vary the build depending on whether a sweep needs short-term access for a liner or cowl fit, versus a bricklayer needing several weeks of continuous use; the hire length and inspection frequency stay the same, but the deck configuration changes.

Chimney scaffolding covers everything from a single detached stack on a period cottage to twin stacks on a semi, capping and flaunching work, flashing replacement where a chimney meets the roof, and full removals down to roof level.

It's also common alongside wider roofing or repointing scaffolding, where the chimney access forms one section of a larger platform rather than a standalone structure; we plan for that at survey stage so nothing is duplicated.

Most chimney scaffolding is residential; cottages, terraces and semis across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and the wider Kent area; where the priority is a tidy footprint that doesn't block a narrow drive or overhang a neighbour's garden without agreement.

Commercial or larger residential blocks with multiple flues need a bigger, load-rated platform and often a formal design with drawings and calculations, which we can provide at extra charge for anything outside a standard domestic build.
